READING AND PHONICS

Reading

At Queensway Infant Academy we believe one of the most important skills for our children to develop is reading.

We believe that reading is a key tool for life.  Teaching children to become excellent readers and to have a love of reading is a major part of what we strive to do.  Children have the opportunity to read every day.  Children will read on either an individual or whole class basis.  Provision allows for our pupils to independently access a range of books and stories.  Our pupils are encouraged to share books at home through our school library service. To ensure books are carefully matched to our pupils abilities, all of our reading books are linked to our phonics programme.  Within our English lessons we carefully plan comprehension opportunities to ensure pupils are developing their abilities to make predictions, to infer, to sequence and explain their thoughts linked to a text through ‘Vipers’.  We ensure that our quality texts allow children to experience and learn ambitious vocabulary.

We have a newly refurbished library with a vast variety of books for the children to borrow.

Phonics

At Queensway Infant Academy and Nursery, our chosen accredited phonics scheme is Little Wandle Letters & Sounds.

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised has been built around the update (Department for Education – Letters and Sounds improving rates of progress 2021) that we were funded to produce by the Department for Education, as well as drawing on the latest research into how children learn best, how to ensure learning stays in children’s long term memory and how best to enable children to apply their learning to become highly competent readers.

There is a strong emphasis on using phonics to read.  Children are exposed from Nursery to phase 1 phonics.  As children transition into Reception, the children are exposed immediately to phase 2.  Children will work through the phases in preparation for the children to pass the phonic screening test in the summer term of Year 1.   As pupils transition into Year 2, they focus on spelling and grammar.  At Queensway we use Spelling Shed alongside Little Wandle to support pupils with spelling and grammar.

Pupils are regularly assessed to identify any misconceptions and will receive interventions to support their development in phonics and spelling.  Pupils are encouraged to apply their phonics knowledge and skills in their reading and writing.

The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home.
